The Climate Photo of this week features severe climate change impacts in the already arid south of Kenya. Photojournalist Georgina Goodwin took this picture last year while in a dust storm during the dry season in Olkiramatian in the Rift Valley.

Rains are becoming unlikely in the region, Ms. Goodwin explained to the UNFCCC Newsroom. “The changes are gradual but are noticeable. The level of the Ewaso Nyiro river, the region lifeline, fell by 12ft in some zones. The crop-growing suffered and water had to be pumped from the river into the drying soil using generators. In the grazing zones, the wildlife or livestock grass literally vanished leaving pastures of thick fine dust”, she added.

The photographer witnessed the people struggle. “Masai children are taken out of school in order to take care of the livestock that now need to travel greater distances to find any form of pasture. As pressure on resources increases, our need to implement protection and mitigation strategies becomes even greater”, she said.
